Github Copilot changed their billing model
... and people are furious.
It was a good time. We probably didn’t appreciate it enough.
Github copilot changed their billing from premium requests to usage-based billing. Every copilot user had a fixed amount of requests per month, and tokens didn’t matter at all. So it was possible to do SO MUCH and never care about the context window or model pricing (while there was a multiplier for more expensive models).
Now Microsoft decided to go the same way as all other providers are: billing based on the token usage and the model pricing.
So my tip for everybody in the same boat: saving tokens by reducing the context that you send to the provider is the most important thing right now - right after deciding if you really need the most capable model (which is probably Opus 4.8 at the time this post is written).
I’m curious to see if there will be a lot of canceled copilot subscriptions soon - at least that’s what I’m reading on reddit A LOT.
See you soon, and happy coding!
